Aging Out of the Foster Care System - 1281 Words

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, every year close to 25,000 youth age out of the foster care system and are faced with cold hard realities of adulthood. This does not include the youth who leave the system, which is estimated to be another 30,000. Most adolescents anticipate their eighteenth birthday, as it brings on a new found sense of independence and most importantly a time of celebration. However when foster children reach eighteen, they begin facing the challenges of transitioning to adulthood. These children disproportionately join the ranks of the homeless, incarcerated, and unemployed. These youth are unprepared for the independent life they are forced to take on. The average age that young adults who have never experienced foster care leave their family home for good is 24, and 40% return home again at least once afterwards (Margolin, 2008). With these facts being stated, we yet expect youth who has dealt with rejection after rejection to leave â€Å"home† of the state custody permanently and fin for themselves. These youth sometimes have fewer than $250 in cash, only one-third have drivers licenses, and fewer than one-quarter have the basic tools to set up a household, let alone the skills to know what to do with the tools (Krinsky, 2010). Modes Essay: â€Å"Homeboy† by Malcolm X In â€Å"Homeboy†, Malcolm X, a prominent leader during the Civil Rights era, discusses discrimination within the black community itself through the use of thoughtful imagery, eloquent diction, and symbolism throughout the essay. As Malcolm X describes the racial prejudice currently within the black community in his new home, he uses imagery to accurately portray the glaring discrepancies between the â€Å"ghetto† blacks and the Hill â€Å"elite.† For example, when he describes the arrogance and misguided haughtiness the Hill elite possess, he states that â€Å"foreign diplomats could have modeled their conduct on the way the Negro postmen...acted, striding around†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (Malcolm X 196). The conk, to Malcolm X, represents â€Å"the emblem of [people’s] shame that [they are] black† (Malcolm X 208). It is the ultimate symbol of the loss of black self-identity. It portrays the willingness blacks have to throw away their heritage, and to embrace the hairstyle that represents self-degradation so wholly and eagerly. In the end, Malcolm X concludes that he, as a past conk-wearer himself, believes that any black man or woman who â€Å"gave the brains in their head just half as much attention as they do their hair, they would be a thousand times better off,† perfectly summing up his feelings of discrimination and self-hatred within the black community (Malcolm X 208). Without subjecting themselves to the indignity and pain of the conk, and focusing on what they have been naturally blessed with, they can truly become a better person in the process. Brown, Achievement: Martial Arts Competition Essay A faint twinge of excitement floated through my body that night. A hint of anticipation of the coming day could not be suppressed; yet to be overcome with anxiety would not do at all. Arduously forced those pernicious thoughts from seeping in and overcoming my body and mind. I still wonder that slept at all that night. But I did. I slept soundly and comfortably as those deliberations crept into my defenseless, unsuspecting mind, pilfering my calm composure. When awoke refreshed, I found my mind swarming with jumbled exhilaration. The adrenaline was flowing already. After a quick breakfast, I pulled some of my gear together and headed out. The car ride Of tuft hours seemed only a few moments as struggled to reinstate order in my chaotic consciousness and focus my mind on the day before me. My thoughts drifted to the indistinct shadows Of my memory. My opponents name was John Doe. There were Other competitors at the tournament, but they had never posed any threat to my title. For as long as had competed in this tournament, had easily taken the black belt championship in my division. John, however, was the most phenomenal martial artist I had ever had the honor of witnessing at my young age of thirteen. And he was in my division. Although he was the same rank. Age, size, and weight as l, he surpassed me in almost every aspect of our training. His feet were lightning, and his hands were virtually invisible in their agile swiftness. He wielded the power off bear while appearing no larger than l. His tort and techniques were executed with near perfection. Although I had never defeated his flawlessness before, victory did not seem unattainable. For even though he was extraordinary, he was not such more talented than l, am not saying that he was not skilled or even that he was not more skilled than l, for he most certainly was, but just not much more than l. Still had one hope, however little, of vanquishing this incredible adversary, forlorn had one weakness: he was lazy. He didnt enjoy practicing long hours or working hard. He didnt have to. Nevertheless, I had found my passage to triumph. My mind raced even farther back to all my other failures. I must admit that my record was not very impressive. Never before had I completed anything. Played soccer. Tit. I was a Cub Scout. I quit. Played trumpet. I quit. Karate was all had left. The championship meant so much because had never persevered With anything else. In the last months, I had trained with unearthly stamina and determination. Had focused all my energies into practicing for this sole aspiration. Every day of the week trained. The tournament had too quickly arrived, and still did not feel prepared for the trial which I was to confront. Stepped out of the car into the bright morning sun, and with my equipment bag in hand, walked into the towering building. The day was a blur. After warming up and stretching, I sat down on the cold wooden floor, closed my eyes, and focused, I cleared my mind of every thought, every worry, and every insecurity.
